Having only announced it last week at the ARC Forum, I'd have to borrow a tagline from Jimmy John's Sandwiches-- Emerson is "freaky fast." Today they've announced that Bristol-Myers Squibb will be, if not their first Syncade customer, at least their first public one.
Here's the release from Emerson's Jerry Moon:
EMERSON’S SYNCADE OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE SELECTED BY BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB FOR NEW BIOPHARMACEUTICAL FACILITY
PlantWeb® architecture with Smart Operations Management suite chosen to optimize performance of Large Scale Cell Culture facility in Devens, Massachusetts
AUSTIN, TEXAS (February 10, 2009) -- Global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) has selected Emerson Process Management to fully automate its new facility in Devens, Massachusetts. Emerson will apply its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture including the new Syncade™ Smart Operations Management suite, DeltaV™ digital automation system and network of intelligent digital field devices.
BMS is investing $750 million in the construction of the new brownfield plant. This Large-Scale Cell Culture (LSCC) manufacturing facility will produce commercial biopharmaceuticals that support the company’s mission to extend and enhance human life. The flexible facility will have 120,000 liters of bioreactor capacity and is designed for campaigned, multi-product production. The groundbreaking for this facility was in March 2007, with plans to be commercially operational in 2011.
The facility has been designed to optimize overall operational effectiveness and ensure competitiveness in the global market. Emerson’s Syncade Smart Operations Management suite is expected to help achieve these objectives. The operational plan is based on electronic workflow to reduce deviations, expedite batch review and release, improve real-time inventory management, and utilize industry and corporate standards. The use of standards will enable quick response to product demand changes, as well as faster and more efficient technology transfer from research to product launch.
Integration of the real-time plant floor information with business enterprise processes is a key component of the facility’s competitive advantage. Operations management will use modular Syncade software for workflow processes including:
- Monitoring and controlling fully automated equipment
- Electronic work instructions
- Equipment status tracking
- Recipe driven operations
- Material tracking
- Automated weigh and dispense operations
- Electronic data capture
- Exception reporting
- Integration of operations workflow with enterprise resource planning
By using standards-based Syncade suite to optimize operations management, BMS is taking advantage of the latest technology advancements to directly improve operational efficiency and reduce engineering effort. Syncade suite uses modular, scalable software to deliver operations management functionality in four critical areas: resource management, operations optimization, integrated information, and quality & compliance. This software adheres to the ISA95 and ISA88 standards which provide benefits that reduce the time and cost required for design, documentation, implementation, testing, and verification of a project. Specifically, BMS is taking advantage of an integrated recipe design and execution environment that spans both manual and automated processes. This approach will automatically generate a comprehensive electronic batch record to meet regulatory compliance requirements, including electronic signatures.
Syncade smart operations management suite extends the value of Emerson’s PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to provide a new class of real-time operations management software. This innovative suite optimizes plant-wide work processes to increase productivity and maximize asset utilization.
