Marquis Who’s Who reported Aug. 23 that longtime Control columnist and pillar of the process control community Greg McMillan has been included in its well-known, biographical volumes in celebration of his decades of dedication to the process engineering field and his work with ControlGlobal.com. Marquis Who’s Who profiles individuals based on their positions, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence.
Based on his decades of process control and automation experience, McMillan has been writing his monthly “Control Talk” for Control magazine and ControlGlobal.com for 22 years. Likewise, he contributes to monthly question-and-answer (Q&A) posts for the International Society of Automation and weekly Q&A posts for Prosera.
McMillan excelled as a senior principal software engineer for Emerson Process Systems and Solutions, where he began as a modeling and control consultant in 2002. Over the years, he also honed his expertise as a modeling and control consultant for CDI Professional Services and Mynah Technologies. He’s also written more than 200 feature articles and papers and authored more than 20 books on process instrumentation, modeling and control.
Throughout his career, McMillan earned patents for methods and systems for batch process control, wireless automation, and rapid model identification. He was also named a senior fellow at Solutia Inc. and Monsanto.
Before establishing himself professionally, McMillan earned a B.S. in engineering physics from the University of Kansas. Subsequently, he expanded his professional knowledge by completing a M.S. in electrical engineering, specializing in control theory from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. To keep up with changes in process control and automation, he participates in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the ISA.
McMillan was inducted into Control’s Process Automation Hall of Fame in its inaugural year in 2001, and received ISA’s Life Achievement Award in 2010. In the past five years, he also received several AIChE best presentation awards and ISA Mentor and Standards Achievement awards.
Though his career has been filled with similar highlights, McMillan reports that he takes the most pride in his progress in pH measurement and control. In addition to completing the fourth edition of his book on the subject, he conducted groundbreaking work in pH modeling, authored a book on compressor modeling and control, and formulated new equations for kinetics in bioprocesses, which enable greater ease of use for a wide range of bioreactions. While hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, McMillan credits his success to maintaining an open mind, learning from others, and embracing lifelong learning. During the next five years, McMillan intends to continue positively impacting his community, fostering open-mindedness, and enhancing collaboration. He also aims to continue his Control Talk column and “Ask the Automation Pros” posts.
