ISA reports automation is key to digital deglobalization

The organization releases whitepaper on securing against uncertainties

Automation technology and techniques implemented by automation professionals can help businesses optimize their digital deglobalization efforts, secure their supply chain infrastructures and improve environmental and social responsibility, according to a new whitepaper, “Automation enables digital deglobalization efforts” published Aug.26 by the International Society of Automation.

Recent supply chain disruptions, geopolitical instability and protectionism, inflationary conditions and demands for increased corporate social responsibility and environmental social governance are all driving deglobalization. ISA reports that businesses are securing against uncertainty by refocusing closer to home, such as reshoring manufacturing, reducing international trade, or investing in local diversification and growth. While they aim to increase resilience and mitigate risk, ISA adds they also need to guard against potential consequences of digital deglobalization efforts, and meet demands from investors and the public for advancing environmental and social responsibility.

“As digital deglobalization pressures grow, businesses are faced with a number of challenges—and automation can help solve many of them,” says Claire Fallon, CEO and executive director of ISA. “Our new position paper establishes how automation can help contribute to resilient supply chains and strengthen cybersecurity. It also outlines how decision-makers can rely on automation technologies and automation professionals, engineers and technicians to achieve their deglobalization goals.”
