The usual (analytics) software suspects

Sept. 21, 2023
An updated but incomplete list of the primary data analytics software packages and tools

Though many others doubtless avoided the dragnet, here's an incomplete list of the primary analytics perpetrators picked up in the latest sweep:

Amazon Timestream is a time-series database service for IoT and operations, which AWS reports can analyze store events less expensively than many typical databases.

Apache Cassandra is an open-source, no-SQL database management system that can process large data volumes from servers. It’s also free and maintains high availability with no one failure point.

Apache Hadoop is a collection of open-source software utilities that lets users employ a multi-computer network to solve complex problems involving huge amounts of data and computation. It uses the MapReduce programming model to provide a software framework for big data processing and distributed storage

Apache Spark, is a distributed, open-source, cluster-computing framework that provides a programming interface with implicit data parallelism and fault tolerance. Spark is based on resilient distributed dataset (RDD), a read-only multi-set of data items across a machine cluster. Spark and its RDDs were developed due to limits in MapReduce cluster computing.

Aveva PI System software links sensor-based data, processes and users to manage efficiency, asset health, quality and resources. It uses server-based technology, generates historical and real-time data, and gives users full enterprise visibility.

Cognite Data Fusion uses a no-code calculation engine to connect data sources, such as historians, IoT platforms, MES, ERP, CMMS, PLM and design/engineering sources/design data for secure, unified access.

Falkonry Insight software employs multi-variate, time-series data to identify trends and anomalies in large amounts of operations information, and enable tsk prioritization of issues for the greatest positive impact on uptime, quality and yield.

Flow Software and its Unified Analytics Framework (UAF) provide a hub for users to collect data from multiple sources; combine, normalize and perform calculations on it; and store results in appropriate time and model context.

Grafana is an open-source, multi-platform analytics and interactive visualization web application. It provides graphs, dashboards and alerts via the web when connected to supported data sources, and can be easily installed using Docker or Docker Compose software.

Lumira processes and visualizes data using business intelligence software from SAP BusinessObjects. It's related to the in-memory, column-oriented SAP Hana relational database management system.

MatLab is MathWorks’ multi-paradigm, numerical computing software and proprietary programming language. It enables data plotting, algorithm deployment, matrix manipulations, HMI construction, and program interfacing with other software, such as C, C++, C#, Java, Fortran and Python.

Mongo DB is an open-source, cross-platform, document-based, NoSQL database program that’s free and uses JSON-like documents with schemas.

MySQL is an open-source database and data intelligence platform from Oracle. Dynamic SQL is a programming methodology that enables users to dynamically build SQL statements at runtime.

Neltilion Analytics can register assets manually or create asset lists automatically with an edge device. It’s part of Endress+Hauser's Netilion environment, and has an insights page with analyses and overviews.

• Plant ESP software from Control Station, proactively monitors loops and provides predictive analytics. It uses existing process data to provide advanced warning of mechanical, tuning and interaction issues. PlantESP’s customizable alerts and reports inform users of changes, while its intuitive KPIs and forensic tools simplify root-cause analyses.

Power BI from Microsoft is a business analytics service that provides intelligence and interactive visualizations via an interface that allows users to build dashboards and reports. It delivers cloud-based BI services, as well as a desktop interface, and provides data warehousing.

Seeq software for process data analytics lets users search information, add context, clean, model, identify patterns, set boundaries, check assets, collaborate in real time, and interact with time series data (TSD). It connects to and works with all types of process data historians

Sorba.ai is industrial AI and machine learning (ML) software that works with its Sorba-SDE platform to collect sensor data, analyze it in the cloud, proactively detect issues, reduce resolution time, and optimize end-to-end system performance.

SparkCognition lets users integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their applications and organizations, and collaborates with them to build human-level intelligence applied at machine scale to optimize operations.

Splunk produces software for searching, monitoring and analyzing machine-generated big data using a web-based interface.

Tableau is data visualization software that joins databases and graphics.

ThingWorx Analytics software from PTC embeds advanced analytics insights into smart, connected solutions, and to apply supervised ML to data.

TrendMiner for the process industries is an analytics tool with predictive capabilities.
