While President Donald Trump made headlines this week by withdrawing the United States' support of the 2015 Paris Agreement, it's this pundit's opinion that while the White House's endorsement for the next four years would be a welcome boost, the Net Zero train has already left the station. Corporations—especially multinational ones—already are beholden to shareholder expectations, and the increasingly influential ranks of Millennial decision-makers are baking sustainability into their purchase decisions. Add to that the intrinsic connection between sustainability and economic performance, and U.S. industry remains likely to choose paths that will increase sustainability over the long term—tomorrow and four years from tomorrow. As Bogart said to Kelly in Casablanca, "We'll always have Paris."
