Obrist Group announced Oct. 30 that it’s licensing its pool of more than 252 filed and 128 granted worldwide patents to developers of sustainable energy solutions. Organized into 81 patent families, Obrist’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio spans technologies from electric vehicles with ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers to synthetic fuels to large-scale facilities for converting solar energy into hydrogen and methanol.
Unlike other technology companies that mostly use their patents for proprietary products, Obrist reports that it’s expressly a licensor for companies seeking to leverage its patent pool for their own products, machinery, and systems—ranging from vehicle powertrains to methanol production facilities.
“The maritime sector aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, mostly by using methanol. Aviation is planning a shift to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by 2050, with methanol projected to account for up to 70%,” says Thorsten Rixmann, chief marketing officer at Obrist. “In the automotive sector, there’s a growing recognition that hybrid vehicles with electric motors and compact power generators—rather than heavy battery blocks—represent the future. Conventional power plants are increasingly integrating renewable energy, while thermal power plants remain crucial for baseload electricity. The Obrist Group holds key patents for all of these developments, providing companies in these industries with the tools to adapt more quickly and effectively to these market shifts.”
Founded by inventor and entrepreneur Frank Obrist, the organization focuses on innovations for global, sustainable and CO2-reducing energy concepts. This spectrum ranges from the global renewable energy supplies to atmospheric fuels (afuels) and innovative CO2-negative (i.e. climate-positive) drive concepts for the automotive industry.
