The MSM300 infrared density meter from Solartron Mobrey measures low density sludges up to 2% suspended solids, making it suitable for monitoring final effluent discharge in compliance with EPA regulations. The meter can also be used to make turbidity and density measurements in water, control mixed liquor suspended solids, control flocculent dosing, and monitor sludge density in tanks, among other applications.
Probes are available for installation in settlement tanks or for in-line mounting in pipelines.
"The Model IL in-line sensor can be installed through a simple mounting boss into any pipeline of 2.5 in. diameter or larger," says Peter Ward, business development manager at Solartron Mobrey. "No additional pipe section is needed to mount the monitor, and a valved version is available that makes it easy to remove the probe under line pressure. The infrared sensing element is positioned flush with the inside wall of the pipe, so the optical surface is kept clean by the flow."
Two probes are available for tanks. The LA probe is suitable for use in aeration systems, activated sludge, and mixed liquor systems with up to 2% suspended solids. The LS sensor monitors very low level levels of suspended solids, such as in final effluent. Both sensors have self-cleaning systems that automatically retract the optics into the body of the sensor to wipe off deposits.
All probes connect to a control unit, which is housed in a polycarbonate IP65/NEMA 4 weatherproof enclosure. The control unit has a lockable membrane keyboard and LCD display, and provides a 4-20 mA output and two relay outputs for control or for high, low, or fault alarms.
Ward says setup is easy. "An easy-to-use menu structure with built-in programming wizards makes setup and calibration intuitive, so even new users find there is no need to refer to the instruction manual," he explains. "Password protection of the keyboard prevents the possibility of settings being altered by unauthorized personnel."
